Statting Up The Geezers

Age and attention to age is ridiculously important in D20 Star Wars Saga Edition. Unlike, other RPGs, including other versions of Star Wars (notably WEG, I don't remember 1st edition D20) the age of characters has dramatic impact on the abilities of characters.

How dramatic? Well a venerable age character has a straight -6 across all physical abilities (STR, DEX, and CON). Pretty rough, considering how many characters in the film are middle aged and older.

But perhaps other folks running D20 don't care about the age of characters...they run their game in that same mythical limbo that allows Batman to continually act like an adult in his prime, despite being over 90 years old this year. However, when playing a Star Wars saga that takes place over years and/or decades, keeping track of the years (and how they impact both PCs and NPCs) is vitally important.

And yet ridiculously fiddly. Count Dooku seems remarkably spry for an 81 year old man in the films, thanks to the magic of CGI and stunt doubles. I mean, I certainly can't do a back-flip to save my life and Christopher Lee rattles 'em off like no octogenarian should. You'd think they (i.e. WotC) would leave the whole age thing out of it, as age seems to slow down no one, save perhaps Alec Guinness.

And yet they don't. And since my experiments with the D20 book is to use the rules as written, I'm embracing the fiddly-ness myself (sorry, Dooku, old boy). I mean, it doesn't really take THAT much more time than the rest of character creation (as D20 is incredibly fiddly with or without aging rules).

Plus, it has a very real impact on the game. Unlike WotC, whose character write-ups are TERRIBLE, I'm not inclined to make every character 19th level. But even so, they ARE high level (the Jedi Masters and Sith Lords, anyway) and so how could the mid-level characters (like Anakin and Obi-Wan) do so well against them? AGE is the balancing factor.

Poor Count Dooku (my favorite geezer). He crosses one of D20's break-points (from Old to Venerable) between Episode II and Episode III and drops several points across his stat line, while Anakin is still in the prime of his youth. No wonder he ends up a carcass ten minutes into the film.

So the question is (once you've embraced the fiddly and decided to re-write the characters) how does one determine ages of the characters?

Welp, when the two trilogy films are your Bible, you've got to go with the Bible. That's roughly how the wookiepedia folks have done it, anyway. 'Course my timeline's a little different from theirs.

Taking the films in chronological order (that is Episode I coming first), characters' ages are based on the actual actors' ages from their first appearance, unless an actual age is stated (like Chewbacca being 200 years old in Episode IV, Yoda being 900 in Episode VI, or Boba Fett being 10 in Episode II). Now when I say "actors' ages," I mean age at the time of filming. So Obi-Wan is 26 in Episode I (even though Ewan McGregor was 28 at the time of the film's release).

Now to tell when in time things occur, we base the timeline off Anakin and Obi-Wan, the main continuous characters between Episodes 3 and 4. By Episode II, McGregor is getting the age make-up, so we can't go with his actual age anymore; instead, we use the adult Anakin. Christian is age 19 during the filming of Episode II. Episode II is supposed to be 10 years after Episode I (based on the cloning order and Tyranus/Dooku's new apprenticeship to Sidious). That means Anakin is supposed to be age 9 during Episode I, and Obi-Wan is thus 17 years older than Anakin, throughout the series.

Guinness is 62 when Episode IV occurs, so Vader is age 45 (regardless of Prowse/James Earl Jones age). Everyone else is easy (Ian McDiarmind is age 54 when appears as Palpatine in Episode I...that means the Emperor is 95 years old in Return of the Jedi!).

EXCEPT that there is no date provided for the battle on Mustafar and the end of the Clone Wars. How old is Anakin when he falls to Darkness? There is no hard-and-fast date. We could use Luke and Leia's age in Episode IV and count backwards to the date of their birth...except that Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher aren't the same age despite playing twins (there's about 4 years difference between 'em)! In the end, I took the route of the wookiepedia folks here: 3 years passed between Episode II and Episode III so Anakin must be three years older (i.e. age 22). And since he's 45 in Episode IV, Luke and Leia must be roughly 23 (or 22 and a half).

With aliens and droids, of course, none of this matters...hell, none of it REALLY matters, does it? But when you start immersing yourself in the fiddly bits of D20...well, I guess one can't help but "nerd out" a bit (or more than a bit!).
; )

All right...off to yoga. Have a good Friday folks! Posting will be light this weekend as we're heading up to Vancouver to check out the Olympics.

Anakin/Vader Updates

All right, I have edited all my prior Vader posts.

Anakin now starts as a Scout 1 with the Fringer Talent Jury-Rigger. Although he loses Vehicle Weapons proficiency, it turns out that the Vehicle Combat feat (which he already had) makes you proficient with all vehicle weapons while piloting, so it wasn't necessary. Also, the additional skills that a Scout starts with (5!) allow me to "dumb-down" Anakin's INT and up his CON...something I think everyone can approve of. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer is our Anakin Skywalker.

In the films, Anakin displays a knowledge of the Huttese language in Episode I, which he never uses again. I prefer to consider this a "bonus feat" in place of the Shake It Off scout feat that he is unable to use until young adulthood (when his CON improves to 13). Once he is able to use Shake It Off the Huttese language goes away (that's just a GM's judgment call, but I don't remember Anakin ever speaking Hutt in films after Episode I...I'll have to re-watch Episode II). If necessary, I suppose I can boost the INT again at the cost of WIS, but that may require a re-adjustment of Force Powers which I am loathe to do at this time.

NOW, I can get on to other items....

My Yoda is so Much More Badass...

Yoda (Episode I-VI)

Small Jedi 8/Jedi Knight 7/Jedi Master 5

Destiny 0 Force 20* Dark Side 0
Languages: Basic, Wookie, One other as needed
*(Strong in Force)

Defenses: Ref 38 For 33 Wil 39
Hps 134 Threshold 33

STR 8 DEX 16 CON 8 INT 14 WIS 20 CHA 16

Melee: Lightsaber +23 (2d6+16 two-handed)

Talents: Ataru, Deflect, Elusive Target, Force Intuition, Force Perception, Foresight, Gauge Force Potential, Lightsaber Throw, Redirect Shot, Skilled Advisor, Visions

Feats: Double Attack, Force Boon, Force Training (2), Force Sensitivity, Improved Defenses, Melee Defense, Skill Focus (Use the Force), Strong in the Force, Triple Attack, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Proficiencies (Lightsabers, Simple Weapons), Whirlwind Attack

Skills: Acrobatics +18, Knowledge (Galactic Lore) +17, Knowledge (Tactics) +17, Use the Force +23 (uses Use the Force in place of Initiative and Perception)

Force Powers: Farseeing, Force Thrust (2), Move Object (3), Rebuke (4), Surge, Vital Transfer

Force Techniques: Force Point Recovery, Improved Sense Force, Improved Sense Surroundings

Force Secrets: Devastating Power, Distant Power, Multitarget Power, Quicken Power

Class Abilities: Fearless, Serenity

Possessions: Short lightsaber, jedi robe, cane

Destiny: Whatever destiny Yoda had was long ago fulfilled.

***NOTE: The abilities here, as with Anakin previously, are based on the Yoda portrayed in the films, with the addition of the powers Surge and Vital Transfer, which admittedly are assumed. Yoda is never shown deflecting laser blasts or severing limbs...he's kind of an all-or-nothing fighter (or "the best defense is a good offense"); however his Reflex scores are so high most folks aren't going to touch him in ranged combat anyway, especially when he is engaged in melee (Elusive Target). On the other hand, Yoda himself counsels the way of peace, and it feels inappropriate to provide too many "attack feats;" while I did add Double and Triple attack, this is more to represent his speed than because he's a battle-hungry combat monster...note also a distinct lack of attacking Force powers (no Battle Strike or Force Slam); again, these aren't displayed by Yoda and WotC's inclusion I find patently ridiculous. His double decapitation on Kashyyyk is best represented by a Whirlwind Attack.

Also, it should be noted that Yoda's species is never named or discussed, and in D20 that means there is no "species bonuses" (or penalties) to include. To represent this, I simply did his attributes as a straight selection + Level bonuses with neither "Destiny" nor "Age" bonuses and penalties; whose to say whether or not Yoda's species starts as a 12' tall humanoid that undergoes a metamorphosis at age 500 into a wizened muppet?

Finally, once again WotC's math seems incorrect in the Yoda write-up. Although possessing different feats/abilities/talents than MY Yoda, I added their math and still find some mysterious "+1" bonus to his Attack score for which I cannot account. It is possible that as a "small size" character Yoda should gain a +1 bonus to his attacks (as per standard D20 rules) but I could find no statement of this in the rulebook, and so have NOT included an additional size bonus to his attack score listed. He's still more than enough Jedi for any opponent.

Oh, yeah...and I corrected the damage for a Short Lightsaber (see your own equipment section notes, dumb-dumbs!).***

+++EDIT: After re-watching Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, I DO see Yoda used both Deflect and Redirect Shot and have added them in place of Sokan and Resist the Dark Side. His Rebuke power and high Use the Force and Will defense should be fine for the latter, and his Acrobatics skill should be high enough to take any action especially with the expenditure of a Force point (+3D8) when necessary.+++

O Shame! - D20 Star Wars (Part 3)

[by the way...apologies to everyone for the tiny font in a couple of these recent posts. I've had a couple posts that got typed up in Pages and for some reason they didn't copy correctly to blogger. Sorry...I was trying something new. We now return to our usual font size]

I wrote up a big old blog post the other day about creating campaigns in Star Wars, especially comparing/contrasting the different perspectives between Knights of the Old Republic (the XBox video game based on D20), WEG Star Wars, and the films. I did not have a chance to post it last night, however, and after some consideration I find I'm not really interested in waxing on about video games anyway (at least not today).

Still, I have something to say regarding the whole XP/level thing.

Was there ever a greater setting more appropriate for a "level up" game than Star Wars?

Personally, I don't think so. Looking at other examples of serial adventure fiction (and what is an RPG "campaign" but a series of adventures?) and you see something VERY different from Star Wars: a noticeable lack of character development/improvement.

Look at Indiana Jones or the characters from Firefly or Battlestar Galactica. Look at James Bond or Jason Bourne of the Bourne Identity series or the elves of ElfQuest. For the most part, what you see is what you get...through the entire series. Characters don't improve dramatically over time...they start badass and/or quirky and remain that way through the entire film/show/book. We follow the series because we enjoy watching the characters, their interactions with each other and their various "adventures." There may superficial changes (Captain Kirk gets new uniforms and rank, for example) but the essential qualities...and in RPG terms, the in-game effectiveness...do NOT change.

Now contrast this with Star Wars. Throughout the entire film series there is a constant emphasis on growth of power and improvement. "You'll find my powers have doubled since last we met." "He has grown in strength and wisdom." "You'll find I am more powerful now than you could possibly imagine." "When I came to you I was but a student, now I am the master."

Throughout the series, over time, we see growth and development, not just of character and personality, but actual ability. In Episode I, Anakin can't float a rock to save his ass. In Episode II he can levitate an apple. By Episode V, Vader is ripping machinery off the walls and tossing it around like it was nothing.

Look at Obi-Wan: he starts out as a rookie Padawan, gains Knighthood status (getting his ass handed to him by Dooku), and then finally becomes a Master, capable of single-handedly knocking off Grievous and Vader.

Luke Skywalker, of course, has a well-illustrated progression from farm boy to ace pilot to Jedi Knight. But even the other characters from the original trilogy (Leia, Han, Lando) show improvement over time, gaining new skills and confidence that translates to "in-film effectiveness." In RPG terms, these characters are "going up in level" based on the accumulation of XP.

For me, that really IS a good reason to play Star Wars using a D20 system. Assuming the system itself works (a whole 'nother post/topic) the changes of class/type and improvement over time is set-up really well to work with these particular game mechanics.

And I say this as a guy who not only would campaign AGAINST most WotC products, but as a guy who is halfway through the design of his own Jedi/Star Wars RPG (it's been put on-hold indefinitely with my other projects, but it's still burbling in the background). I'm not quite ready to say that the D20 Saga Edition is better than WEG Star Wars 2nd Ed. (my prior favorite in published Star Wars RPG products), but the two are drawing closer together.

Anyhoo, just my thoughts of the day, as I get ready to post a new character re-write.
; )

Throw the Damn Thing Already!

Are Wizards of the Coast retarded or what?

The D20 Star Wars RPG (Saga Edition) includes the special "talent" Throw Lightsaber. Anyone whose watched the films as many times as I have can tell you there are exactly two times anyone "throws a lightsaber" purposefully with intent to harm.

Darth Vader (in Return of the Jedi) - during the fight aboard the Death Star.

Yoda (in Revenge of the Sith) - during the fight outside the Jedi Temple. For those who may have missed it, a CGI Yoda throws a CGI lightsaber at a CGI "clone trooper" impaling the poor bastard through the chest.

So guess which character write-ups in the game don't include the Talent throw lightsaber?

Idiots.

But we knew that already, right? Guess Yoda will be the next write-up. Ah, well...I was going to get to ALL the geezers anyway, but it's still damned annoying. Again, though, it re-emphasizes that there's absolutely no need to buy their source books when the info in 'em is crap.

BY THE WAY: Someone pointed out to me that the original D20 version of Anakin/Vader started his class with the Fringer class, which has since been combined under the Scout class. While adding Scout with Fringer Talents to Anakin would make him heartier (he'd gain 12 hit points and the Shrug It Off feat), he's actually LOSE MORE than he'd gain as the non-heroic class allows a bit more customization (I'd have to blow feats to give him proficiency with vehicular ("Heavy") weapons and skill focuses and such. I'll consider revising my re-writes though...hell, why not re-revise revisions?

***NOTE: Certain character options, specifically Force Techniques and Force Secrets state "once selected, they may not be changed." No such stipulation is made regarding other presumed permanent character options like Talents, Feats, Skills, and Force Powers. I cannot find a section of the rules that addresses changing these options, so I have not done so. However, if available as an option I would have replaced Vader's Dual Weapon Mastery feat with Skill Focus (Use the Force) to off-set the penalties from his cybernetic limbs...and probably replace Rapid Strike with Power Attack. With such abilities (especially his Dark Rage mastery), Vader becomes an even more frightening combatant than he already is: a lumbering behemoth of rage and angst. Coupled with some GM fiat with regard to ability scores (the core rulebook's listing has the wheezy, middle-aged cripple with a Constitution of 17!) and Vader would be a real monster...however, I think this guy is plenty tough (while still defeatable by a Luke Skywalker playing out of his mind). Interestingly, both WotC and myself start His Royal Badness with a Destiny of 3 by Episode IV. That's the problem with fulfilling a Destiny...use lose all the points you've accumulated.***
