The Lost Shrine of the Snake Goddess (Matthew T. Austin)
Savage Swords adventure
I am reviewing these in the order they were submitted. For my review criteria, please check out this post. All reviews will (probably) contain *SPOILERS*; you have been warned! Because these are short (two page) adventures, it is my intention to keep the reviews brief.
More snakes, more temples. This year's contest is definitely showing certain trends (giant ants being another...although Austin's adventure leaves out any insects).
I'll keep this brief, citing Gibson's contest rules:
*Must be compatible with TSR-era D&D So B/X, OD&D, AD&D or a very close retroclone (ACKS is close enough, Shadowdark is not, if that helps).
Red Room's Savage Swords RPG is a class-less, level-less, skill-based system. It is thus NOT compatible with TSR-era D&D.
Zero stars for disqualification.
Never heard of savage swords before, looks like it's a clone/reboot of the old tsr conan game, that's why it claims to be osr(some people have different ideas of what osr means). Though there is also a savage swords on dms guild which is a mod of 5e to make a swords and sorcery experience. But yeah either way it's not in any way related to tsr edition d&d.

ReplyDeleteSomething of a different tone than your regular Dear JB mailbag...
I have been ignoring the reddit posts that pop up in my inbox (New Year's resolution) so "thank you" (kind of) for hipping me to this one.
DeleteLook, the guy is a NuSR nut. He's not a Dungeon Master...he's a step up from an improv teacher at amateur night.
And, by the way, that's FINE. He enjoys what he does, and he's found the RPGs (Cairn, etc.) that work for what he enjoys. That's great! More power to him!
Not really my cup o tea. Oh, I enjoy improv workshops (did a lot of those back when I was getting my B.A. in performing arts). But that's a whole different "game" from the game of D&D. "Roll For Shoes" isn't the kind of thing that you build a longterm campaign off.
So...yeah. Guy may as well be in a different solar system.
