Comes Chaos (for B/X)

SO...completely unrelated to anything I've written over the last few weeks, the new book (at least in electronic form) is finished.  That is to say: the PDF is available for purchase...or will be, once it's been vetted over at DriveThruRPG.

It's called COMES CHAOS. It is a campaign setting supplement for B/X. It is 64 pages long and features artwork by Kelvin Green. For the background/story of this work (started back in 2016...when I was still in Paraguay!) you can check out this old post on the subject.

Here's the marketing copy:
COMES CHAOS is a campaign setting designed for use with the B/X fantasy adventure game (and compatible retro-clones). It contains the information needed to transform your home campaign into a chaotic hellscape populated with mutants and demons, dark sorcery and depraved cultists.

The book contains new ways to use old character classes. It contains dozens of spells of dark sorcery. More than 100 mutations and "gifts" of the dark powers. New combat options. Scores of monstrous foes and demons. More than 50 unholy magic items. Rules for creating chaotic wastelands, rules for corrupting player characters, rules for demons and cultists and for running a setting of ever encroaching chaos and the heroes that struggle against its rising tide. Information on running a villainous campaign for aspiring champions of evil, as well as guidelines for redeeming those who fall to darkness.

A 64 page book, illustrated by Kelvin Green. Whether you're looking for a unifying theme for your fantasy adventure game, or simply want to spice up your campaign with demonic possession and vile enchantments, COMES CHAOS has plenty of demented ideas for your enjoyment.

Cheers, folks. Happy Thursday!

    2. Seriously? From a DriveThru purchase? I just downloaded it myself (twice!), and the thing worked fine. It's just a PDF.

I wonder if it's a DTR issue. Try the download again; if it ain't working, I'll make sure to get you a copy.

    3. I'll try on a different computer.

Here is the error (typo in the code above)

There was a problem reading this document (14).

  2. The covers render fine, but the interior pages do not.

    1. Bizarre: I just downloaded it on a different device (a Chromebook) and it was fine...both the interior and the cover (it's a single document). I have a message into OneBookShelf to check it out.

  3. Weird...It worked great on my phone. Go figure.

    1. Can you send it from your phone to your comp? You shouldn't need such a work-around (duh) but it might be more expedient that waiting for the help-ticket to go through.

  4. AND stranger still! When I moved it from my phone to my PC it gives me the same error!
I am using Acrobat Pro DC 2021 on one computer and Acrobat Reader DC 2021 on the other.
IT will open in Chrome's PDF reader.

I had to go to Chrome, print as a PDF and then use that copy to open up in Reader.

    1. Dude. Not sure what to tell you. The thing was created in Word (v.16.32) and then exported to PDF. I *assume* it's compatible with Acrobat, but y'all are more up on this technology stuff than yours truly. One of the reasons I prefer print copies (*sigh*).

  5. Never a dull moment as an indie publisher is there!
Might want to recheck your PDF settings, the cover takes some time to render so if you used Photoshop for the cover you might want to flatten the layers before converting it to PDF.
Though the effect is rather cool and gives the red arrows a more "chaotic" feel to them.

    1. Well, that's something anyway. Should have expected some gremlin-y nonsense from a book devoted to Chaos.

  6. Cool but didn't you just tell me AD&D is the one true version of D&D. I burned my B/X books last week.

    1. LOL. I sure did (and I'll stick with it). But for those folks who still prefer a more streamlined version of the "true" game, this may be a fun little diversion.

    2. Must have it in print! And re-written with the true AD&D stats... but I'll settle for print

    3. Hoping to have a hardcover soon. But wanted to have the PDF available in time for Halloween.

    1. Had another customer that had difficulties opening the doc in Acrobat. No idea why.

I added a "no cover" version of the file to the product, and that seems to have fixed the Acrobat issues. Still waiting to hear back from DTR, but it may just be some sort of weird incompatibility with Acrobat 2021.

    2. The cover should be fixed. Apologies.

  8. Awesome! Just read through it, and it will mesh very well with my take on the broken lands.

    1. Glad to hear the file's working for you (and that the book will mesh with your campaign).

Cry Dark Future is the next book I'm hoping to publish, but at this point it's looking like it will be without artwork (since my artist has gone two years without getting me more that a couple sketches).

  10. Just come across your 2016 post saying this was almost finished (!) You deserve a beer for seeing it thru to actually finished

    1. Oh, I collected on that beer...and then some.

It was actually a project I'd contemplated doing a decade ago, but had thought was, um, a general "no-go" for multiple reasons. It took J.V. West's contest to get me to actually move on it.

  11. Any chance you will publish a bookmarked version of the PDF?

    1. Very little, I'm afraid...unless I figure out how to do such a thing!
