Really? Are You Kidding Me?

Not a single one of the dozens of gaming blog has anything to say about the new Star Wars preview? I had to watch the thing a couple-three times. I'll probably watch it another few times before I get on the plane tomorrow morning. But I figured I'd see some comments around this corner of the internet.

Jeez, folks...too busy shopping or something?
; )

Here's a link for those who missed it. My own comments in a couple days...I've got to pack for a looooong trip right now.

No Opinions?

  1. X-wings over water, TIE fighters, and the Falcon going ballistic. And the John Williams theme with no "episode" in sight. Chills. It's a long time until next December....

  2. As far as teasers go, it wasn't bad, though I'm not a fan of the crossguard lightsaber. This definitely doesn't look like the Jedi Prince film I was hoping for as a kid, but I'm keeping an open mind

    1. Just found out that series is widely considered to be terrible, so maybe it's for the best they weren't turned into movies. In my defense, I was a preadolescent when I read them

    2. I don't know anything at all about Jedi Prince, but I can still say with confidence that a movie based on it couldn't be worse than the last three actual Star Wars movies.

  3. I really don't understand how anyone can take Star Wars seriously anymore. Presumably J.J. isn't going to have the guts to do yet another ludicrous timeline reset like he did with Star Trek, so the prequels still happened. For me, those ghastly films poison anything related to Star Wars - permanently and irredeemably.

    1. I am of a similar mindset. Abrams is really going to have to hit one into the next galaxy for anything associated with Star Wars to win me back as a fan. It pains me to say that, since like most Gen X guys I loved Star Wars growing up. But the steaming piles that were films 1-3 absolutely ruined the "franchise" for me.

Kinda like Metallica and the Black, Load, and Reload albums. :-)

And with Disney calling the shots now, I don't hold out any new hope!

    2. If they choose to ape the original three penty of older fanboys will be happy, The less attention paid t. Episodes 1 to 3 the better as they undid so much of the mystique for me... The Jedi as the Space U.N. league of superheroes really didn't work for me in context with the good trilogy.

  4. I guess that I'm going to be that guy. I wasn't impressed. Too much of it looked like it was done just to try and be "cool", rather than to make a good Star Wars film. It was, however, only a teaser, so I am still hoping it will be a decent film.

Also, I didn't hate the prequel three as much as some people seem to. There were, it is true, significant problems involved with minimizing the story to just a few people (the C3PO/Anakin thing, for starters) and with Lucas's apparent inability to understand intimate human relationships, but they weren't terrible.

  5. Its got the "hey look Star Wars" thing going for it but other then a lightsaber with a crossguard I'm not seeing anything new, after 6 movies and 4 (or more) animated series I'm going to need more to really have an opinion.

  6. I don’t think there’s much worth saying about a teaser trailer...including this one. It does seem to indicate that this will look more like a Abrams film than a Lucas-aping-Kurosawa film. I’m not sure that one path or the other would necessarily be better.

  7. I posted my comments in my G+ feed, rather than on the blog. Don't care for the crossbars on the lightsaber, but otherwise it looks promising. But then again, I'm one of the few people I know who actually likes the prequels, so...

  8. Just as I predicted, it looks like the director isn't shying away from political correctness. First scene of the film shows a black guy's face plastered front and center. Oh and then the female riding the bike. Black guy: check. Female: check. Not a white male to be seen: check. Good, all the race/gender obsessed people are happy now. Onto the Star Wars fanboys...

This entire trailer reeks of appeasement of the prequel haters. If someone didn't tell me this was the official episode 7 teaser, I would have mistaken it for a fan remake of "A New Hope" or a fan spin-off of the original series. Seriously, nearly every scene makes sure to make fans of the original happy. Except it doesn't make much sense...

Twenty years have passed, yet we're still seeing the same crappy ships used during the "dark times". The same X-wings, the (near) identical pilot helmets, the same crappy Tatooine, nearly the same storm troopers, the same Millenium Falcon (that thing was a piece of junk years ago and it's still flying around? Yeah...no).

Shouldn't the rebellion be over by now? It looks like nothing has changed at all. I mean killing the emperor, vader, blowing up the death star (for the 2nd time), and all the celebrations on Coruscant kind of hint that the good guys won, or at least severely crippled the empire...doesn't it?

And then the guy with the insane light-saber. We already did every loony lightsaber design we could think of in the prequel trilogy, so now the "broadsaber"? Really?

Looks like Abrams is trying to do everything possible to kiss everyone's ass with this. I guess I can't blame him, but then again, this is a no win situation. Go too crazy and people scream George Lucas, Keep it too grounded and people scream unoriginal.

    1. A movie is pee cee because there's a black face and a woman on a mototcycle? Gimmie a break.

    2. The cry for both a leading black and female actor in this film has been a big side story since the Ep7 announcement was first made. Google it. And sure enough, we get both, front and center in the first teaser.

You don't think every scene was hand picked to satisfy a specific (loud) group of people to avoid controversy? It's utterly naive to think otherwise. And the X-wings, Falcon, storm troopers, etc are all there to shut-up the rabid original trilogy fans.

This film is bigger than anything since Ep1. All eyes are on it. Of course they're going to do -everything- possible to make sure every millisecond of press and trailer releases are groomed to PR perfection.
